A Cup of Cold Water

by Kathy Ruff

I just finished reading an excerpt from a 1987 writing in the Episcopal Church’s daily devotional Forward Day By Day.

It talked about the Cup of Cold Water Society, which I couldn’t find on the Internet, so I’m not sure if it still exists. The concept stems from this biblical passage:

“And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones in a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42

The philosophy behind the Society was to give a little help to someone, even if only a cup of cold water, and tell no one you did it.

I guess this example won’t count any more since I’m telling about it, but I did that years ago. A co-worker at a place where I worked had health and financial problems. So at Christmastime, I purchased the ingredients for a full turkey dinner and, through a supervisor, gave it to her anonymously. It made me feel great! I hope it made her feel good, too.

What cup of cold water can you share?
