Calm at the watershed |
The end of another fall season draws near. A few trees hold their colors and leaves, but they will soon follow their call.
Looking at this picture of the reflection in the lake, I was struck by the water’s calm. It was as if the water were a mirror held perfectly level and steady. Mother Nature set this calm.
I wonder how we could create such a calming picture in our lives. Some people use meditation; others use yoga, Tai Chi or other eastern exercises or modalities.
Qigong is one method I use on occasion, but just walking out in nature sets my calm. Hearing the chatter of birds or the rustle of a squirrel or bunny, smelling the distinct smell of the earth being fed by the fallen leaves, feeling a twinge of coolness on tips of my ears — all these signs of life help to put my mind in sync with those natural realities. Letting go of the chatter in my mind and replacing it with all of this sets the calm for me.
What helps you to set the calm in your life?
